There was a need to organize information and records and make them readily available to the City's Traffic and Transportation Planning staff that could be accessed 24 hours a day at any location onsite or remote. Previously, these records were saved on computer hard drives or physical copies filed in cabinets.
In addition, the City has made significant investments into its Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) resulting in a robust traffic management infrastructure. Each one of these ITS systems offers its own platform to collect information, access data and run reports. This presents several challenges. Some of these challenges include:
- Certain systems only accessible in the City's Traffic Operations Center
- If a web-based platform was available, the end user has to remember multiple websites, logins and passwords
- May not be optimized for mobile viewing for staff working in the field
- In many cases, data downloads are not automatic and had to be queried to run reports. This involves a considerable time effort by staff to get the data they need.
Our objective was to solve the above challenges by developing a central database where all information and data can be readily available anytime to all staff whether in the office or in the field. A secondary objective to the central database is that access could be given to consultants or other government agencies on a project specific basis.
